* Please note we do not accept applications for summer admission. Students seeking a summer admission must earn a Fall admission and then work with the Technical Division to which they have applied to secure special priority early admission for the preceding summer
All applicants must hold a Bachelor of Science degree (typically in Engineering, Physical Sciences or Mathematics) from an accredited institution. Students who do not already hold a degree in Engineering may be considered for provisional admission if the technical division minimum prerequisites are successfully completed.
GPA: 3.0 minimum (4.0 scale)
Graduate Record Examination (GRE): overall score of 306 with a minimum score of 156 in the quantitative section

PhD applicants must hold a Master of Science degree from an accredited institution. If a student is applying directly from an undergraduate program, the student may be considered for admission into the PhD program but the start of the PhD program will not begin until the student has satisfactorily completed all requirements for the Master of Science degree first and foremost. However, under special circumstances a faculty member may request a conditional acceptance for students who do not want to receive a Master of Science degree.
Admission to the PhD Program for Current MS students: Students completing the MS program in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering must reapply to continue studies in the PhD program. Students should apply online. All transcripts are obtained automatically, but the student will need to provide additional letters of reference, and a new personal statement. Other documents may be required. A student must secure a research advisor to be accepted to the PhD program.

While not guaranteed, applicants with lower GPAs or GRE scores may be considered for provisional admission if other indicators of ability are exceptional (letters of recommendation, GRE/GPA, prior experience, etc.).
English Proficiency: Please see the International Student and Scholar Service's website for the minimum TOEFL and IELTS requirements. Please note that English courses are not included in tuition remission associated with financial offers or Graduate Teaching or Research Assistantships. Students who are required to take Engish courses as conditions of their admission are required to pay the tuition for these courses

- US citizens/permanent residents/international applicants with foreign credentials, if your native language is not English and you do not hold a degree from an institution in the U.S. then you may be required to submit proof of English proficiency via TOEFL or IELTS scores. *The electronic submission of application materials helps expedite the review of an application. Completed applications are reviewed by an admissions committee in each graduate degree program. The recommendations of the committees are submitted to the Dean of the Graduate School, who will make the final admission decision. Students seeking to complete graduate work at the University of Maryland for degree purposes must be formally admitted to the Graduate School by the Dean.
Letters of recommendation must be submitted electronically through the online application. We require official institutional email addresses for your recommenders.
Official transcripts from all previously attended higher education institutions should be uploaded to your application. If a transcript is not in English, both an original language version and English translation must be provided. GRE and TOEFL/IELTS scores are sent electronically from the testing company, ETS. Please use institution code 5814. The department code is not important. It takes 2-3 weeks for us to receive scores, so please request your score report well in advance.
Applications are submitted online via the Graduate School website. When creating your application account, please ensure that your name matches the name listed on your official, government-issued identification (e.g., passport).
In the Educational Intent section of the application, please select:
- College/School: A. James Clark School of Engineering - Research Programs
- Program of Study: Civil and Environmental Engineering (ENCE)
- Degree: MS or PhD
- Area of Interest: Select one of the seven (7) technical areas
In the Previous Education section, please enter your cumulative GPA, as listed on your transcript, for each school you attended. International students should NOT convert their GPA to the 4.0 scale, instead please select the appropriate grading scale.
The Publications/Presentations section is not required; there is no need to submit documents.
The Faculty of Interest section is not required. If you do wish to include faculty of interest, it is not required to contact them. If you do contact faculty, please note that due to the high volume of applicants applying to the department, the faculty member(s) may not be able to respond to all inquiries.
In the Upload Requirements section, only item #1 (Statement of Purpose) and item #2 (Resume/CV) are required. Please disregard all other items as these materials will not be considered as part of the application.
In the Recommendations section, please add a minimum of 3 recommendation providers. It would be wise to contact these individuals in advance to ensure the provider is willing to write you a letter of recommendation. Once entered, the ApplyYourself application system will send an automatic notification email which will indicate "University of Maryland, College Park - Graduate School" as the sender but will come from firstname.lastname@example.org. If your recommenders use a spam-blocking tool, please ask them to add this email address to their list of known/safe addresses.
After responding to both required and relevant items, submit your application and pay the $75 application fee.

After your application is complete, it will be reviewed by the Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) department. The department will decide whether or not to recommend you for admission to the Graduate School. The Graduate School then makes all final admissions decisions and will issue the official admission letter.
CEE Admissions Committees: The Graduate Program is comprised of seven Technical Divisions:

Admissions committees will not review an application until it becomes complete, so applicants are encouraged to complete their application packages as close to the preferred deadline as possible.
Application Status & Timeline
Applicants are notified of a decision as soon as one is reached. However, each student may check his or her application status (complete/incomplete/review status) online through the ApplyYourself application system.
In most cases, applicants who have submitted complete application packages by the stated deadline should receive notification of admission or rejection between February and May for the Fall admission cycle, and between September and November for the Spring admission cycle. Once the decision has been made, you will be able to view your decision letter online by logging back into the ApplyYourself application.
All applicants who request consideration for assistantships and fellowships and who meet the preferred deadline will be reviewed as part of the admission process and will be considered for the departmental financial support. However, funding allocations are competitive and based upon available resources. Financial Assistance is not guaranteed to all students. Most financial aid offers are made before April 15th.
- It is important to understand that offers of financial assistantship cannot be considered by our faculty or admissions committee prior to submission of a complete application

- Clark School Distinguished Graduate Fellowships are offered to applicants with exceptionally strong academic records. Fellowships include full tuition remission, subsidized health benefits, and a generous stipend.
- Graduate Research Assistantships (GRAs) are awarded to applicants by individual faculty members who have active, grant-funded research projects.
U.S. students interested in receiving Federal support should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the February 15 University of Maryland Office of Student Financial Aid priority deadline.
The I-20 is issued by the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office when the Graduate School grants admission. Admitted students will receive all necessary immigration information in order to obtain an I-20 directly from ISSS.

Please note that all incomplete applications as well as applications from international students who are not cleared for admission will be withdrawn by June 1 for the Fall semester and December 1 for the Spring semester. Applicants who do not register for the semester for which they are admitted will have their admission terminated.
