Stormwater nitrogen and phosphorus removal to meet TMDLs
Studies are underway to develop media, media modifications, and alternative designs for enhanced removal of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) species from urban stormwater runoff. Emphasis is placed on treating N and P using a media that can function under high flow rates. Significant improvements in P capture are being realized using an aluminum-based amendment. Layering of various materials to promote sorption processes, followed by biotransformation, is being investigated for N removal. More information is available online.
