FHWA NDT Manual & Webinar for Precast Concrete

Professor Goulias developed a Nondestructive Testing Manual for Quality Assurance of Precast Concrete. A webinar to FHWA and state DOT engineers and the precast concrete industry was also delivered on the findings.                                                                                                                      

State DOTs routinely accept nonstructural precast concrete products for highway projects. To assess product quality agencies need to develop quality assurance (QA) procedures and testing methods. There are several advantages of using nondestructive testing (NDT) into the QA process. Use of NDT methods provide “added value” into QA since: can quickly assess product uniformity as production goes on; can identify potential defects during production allowing for quick corrective actions; can inspect a higher number of precast concrete products without destructive or damaging effects related to coring and other destructive testing; and thus, can lower inspection cost. The objective of this FHWA sponsored study was to develop an NDT based Quality Assurance (QA) manual for precast concrete elements. The manual highlights the best practice in QA by the states, identifies the best NDT methods applicable to nonstructural precast concrete products, and proposes an NDT based QA program.

A FHWA webinar was also developed and delivered by Prof. Goulias providing an overview of the current state-of-practice in QA of precast concrete elements, covering the applicable NDT methods, and presenting the NDT based QA program.
